Reverse osmosis is a water purification process that uses a partially permeable membrane to remove ions, unwanted molecules, and larger particles from water. Reverse osmosis can remove many types of dissolved and suspended solids, as well as viruses and bacteria from water in the industrial process.
By passing hard water over man-made ion exchange resin beads in a pressure vessel tank, ions exchange hardness minerals (calcium, magnesium) in water for sodium, resulting in softened resin beads which do not build up on surfaces as scale deposits. Softened water requires less cleaning detergents for process and reduces or eliminates scale build-up in piping and equipment.
Media filters use a bed of sand, peat, crushed granite, or other material to filter water for various applications. Some designs use multiple layers of media in various coarseness to provide efficient drainage. As particles become trapped in the media, the differential pressure across the bed increases. Periodically, a backwash may be initiated to remove the solids trapped in the bed.
